Gorham - Another Perspective

Received the following email from Norm, of the Gorham Lions Club, concerning their great little show:

"Good morning Bill ,read with great interest your blog on yesterday show , couple of changes were made this year to reduce classes but I guess that just complicated the works, last year there was little or no interest in trucks both mini and full size so we grouped them together reducing the classes by two but there was a request to add commercial units and they were to be behind the school but none showed that was the second group you mention. We also grouped the camaros and firebirds together for same reason and dropped restoration in progress as there were little or no interest last year, sooner or later we may get it right. As for the block voting we were advised of that but there is little we can do about that. We did discover some class jumping but it was after the voting had started so it was two late to do anything about it except cause some commotions which we did not need...As for the old stock cars the owners had inquired if they could be there but we had no spot for them they made a issue of paying since they were not in the running I am guessing they were not above board with our registration folks and I believe those vehicle came in a trailer so could not be seen by our spotters. Please be easy with us we are Lions not cars owners and our purpose is raise fund for our local community projects. We trust those who attend many of these events to be honest with us but I guess we need to be on guard. Thanks for you comments we will try to address those items if we can."

Thank you for the clarification, Norm. We all realize this is a bit new to you, and that there are some things out of anyone's control. You did a fine job overall. A lot of shows that have been around for years could learn a thing or two from you guys.

I THOUGHT THE GORHAM SHOW WAS OK AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE A GREAT SHOW. AS CARS ENTER THEY NEED TO BE CLASSED BY SOMEONE OF KNOWLEDGE TO STOP THE SPECIAL INTEREST CLASS FROM BEING INVADED BY THOSE WHO BELONG IN ANOTHER CLASS. SECONDLY,BEST OF SHOW SHOULD ALWAYS BE A CAR THAT IS FIRST IN ITS CLASS. HOW COULD IT BE THE BEST IF IT WAS SECOND OR THIRD IN ITS CLASS? THEREFORE TO STOP THE BLOCK VOTING THE BEST OF SHOW SHOULDN'T BE CHOSEN BY THE CAR OWNERS BUT RATHER BY THE SHOW FOLKS,IN THIS CASE THE LIONS CLUB MEMBERS!KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK LIONS,IT'LL GET BETTER AND MORE WILL COME AND YOUR FUND RAISER WILL BE MORE PROFITABLE!

I have to disagree with this. I know the person who won best of show and there was absolutely no block voting on this car. As for the Lions Club Members voting, did no one notice that the car that won the Lions Choice is owned by a Lion, so I would say that is not the solution.

I too know the person who won "Best of Show" and how is it possible for a car that doesn't place at too many shows, and even to place 2nd in their class the day of this show, be given the "Best of Show" trophy? How can that not be block voting? Come on people.....For Real!

If it is what happened at one show earlier this (found out and reported at that show), a member of the club putting on the show (which I believe if you are putting on the show, should not win trophies at their own show, in my opinion), stuffed the ballet by saying he had 6 cars there, voted 6 times for himself, and said he lost them and got another 6 ballets. Cheating is alive and well and knows no limits.

I also did not see anyway that car could win best of show when there was quite a few better cars there. Now I know how. Its a nice car but not that good. The lions club choice car I thought was worthy, did not know it belonged to a member. Will be back next year. Very nice people putting the show on and its nice to see everybody.

To clarfiy a coment the car owner of Lions choice is not and has never been a member of Gorham Lions but is a long time member of ether Deering or Portland club so there was no connection with Gorham group. Sorry guys better luck next time, you be better off using your time working on cleaning up your act on block voting and getting cars in the right class
